A little candle

Acts 2

New King James Version (NKJV)

Coming of the Holy Spirit

2 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord[a] in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Crowd’s Response

5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

A little candle can produce a lot of light. Have you ever been in a totally dark room and then lit a candle? Even though the flame is only tiny it can still light up the whole room. One flame by itself has a lot of power. But if you then light lots of candles, the power is much greater and the light much brighter. Still, those flames are apart, but if you bring them together and light a fire in a fire place, all of a sudden the brightness fills the room and it produces great warmth to fill the room too.

The Holy Spirit came at Pentecost and now each of us can live in the power of that Holy Spirit. Individually we have God's awesome power, but when we join together that power is much greater - we are better together!

So today we are commissioned to go out In faith, hope and love. We have faith in God, that he will give us what we need for the journey; we have hope in God's promises for the future; and we share God's love with the world.

Consider these 3 questions:

  1. What do you have faith and trust in?

  2. What are your hopes for yourself and for the world for the future?

  3. How can you show love to friends, family and strangers?
