Next Meeting The next meeting details will be posted here soon Alston Hall VisitWhat a wonderful evening was had by over 40 members of crossway when they visited Alston Hall on the 16th June for a beautiful and filling meal and a talk by Ann Kelly on her memories of the early years in Blackkpool. We all congregated in the conservatory whilst everyone arrived and we were then escorted into one of the dining room where the ladies outnumbered the men by five to one but it didnt stop the dining room having a gentle buzz of talking and laughter. The meal of soup, lemon chicken and a gateaux of nuts, chocolate and cream was enjoyed by all and after coffee we made our way into one of the lecture rooms. Ann Kelly, born and bred in Blackpool, with the aid of some wonderful images projected onto a screen, recounted the development of Blackpool from its early beginings and bringing humour to the talk with some of her memories of growing up there. She talked about the development of tourism, the building of the winter gardens, the grand theatre, the famous tower and pleasure beach. Some of the membes of crossway added to her talk with their memories of Blackpool and the influx of people durind the wakes weeks from all parts of the country. Ann rounded the evening off with some amazing facts about Blackpool, some of which are shown below and some are difficult to believe. - there are more than 3,500 hotels, guest houses and self catering flats in the resort - the flagpole at the top of the tower is 60ft long and it takes 9 tons of paint to repaint the tower and 10,000 bulbs to illuminate it during the illuminations - Blackpool had the first permanent electric tramway which opened on the 29th Sept. 1885 - in one day in Blackpool:- - 18,649 people hired deck chairs - 2 people were rescued by lifeboat - 60 tons of rubbish was cleaned from the streets - 10 people died suddenly, 2 of them were visitors - 57 men were charged with being drunk - 122,000 people travelled on trams - 46 people missed their coach home A special thanks from all those who attended to those who arranged a wonderful evening Below are some of the members of Crossway enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Alston Hall
